Usual queues for over-priced ice-cream (and even longer queues, which we did not tackle, if you want something more substantial.NT seems eternally unable to run cafes efficiently!)!īe aware that egress from the site is not easy if you need to turn right onto the A46 felt like quite a gamble trying to get out onto the main road!īasically, if you want to pay a lot to go for a stroll, then go ahead, but to see a stately home, I'd suggest that the NT has better in their collection. I felt that the NT classify this place as an embarrassment to the organisation, given the historical links to the slave trade, and a huge focus is placed on apologising, without actually trying to set everything in the context of the times.įurther embarrassment for the National Trust.ok to cull a full herd of deer, but not ok to cull badgers. Perhaps even a glimpse of un-restored so that we could understand the work that that NT has been doing. I would have been fascinated to know more about the gap between the original owners and the current restoration. One door to a cupboard open, with a plaque praising us for finding the squirrel, but absolutely no context. 2 of the rooms had a strange stretch of wall which was supposed to give an idea of something, but am not sure what, and it looked most odd. It seems that almost all of the doors were marked with no access. The gardens were pretty, with a blaze of spring flowers. I suspect there would have been quite stunning views on a clearer day, but still glorious to see so much. The grounds provide a lovely walk and I, for one, was glad to be walking without dogs racing around (it does seem that everywhere is obliged to provide space for dogs, regardless of what other guests may like!).

I could see how any paying visitor would be disgruntled. One to two hours will see you through, longer if you have food or walk up and down from the house. What more can I say, standard NT, quite expensive but still worth a walk around.Īt the time of our visit, this could change in the future.

The gardens and church are worth a visit though. I too would be mighty upset if I had paid the full entry fee for 4 adults.

As a previous review has said, it takes no time at all to walk around. I must say that the food and coffee here was good and above the normal for NT properties. There is the usual NT shop selling all things NT at ridiculous prices along with a large indoor and outdoor cafe. The location, parkland and views around the area are beautiful. Probably not the best walk if you are pushing a buggy or have small children either. It is possible to walk it if you are fully mobile, a mobility bus is provided if required. Yes you have to pay to park if you are not a NT member. The car park is a fair distance from the house at the top of a long steep hill. They probably lose a fortune in entry fees through this. The first thing to say is, surprisingly for a property of this size is they do not allow dogs on the grounds.
